Original Art versus Giclée Prints

The newest ink-jet printing technology allows high quality Giclée (pronounced Zhee-Clay) prints to be made on archival quality canvas with long-lasting inks. These prints adhere closely to the original artwork, if done by an expert printmaker with the artist's approval.  Although an unlimited number of  reproductions could be made of a single original, most artists choose to limit the edition to increase the value of each one. The problem is that there are also mass-market prints being sold which are low in quality. These cheap reproductions give the name "Giclée print"  a bad reputation.

If buyers have a choice, should they purchase an original or a quality reproduction of it?  The answer depends on their art budget and the purpose for buying the art.  Collectors, who expect to keep the art they purchase and to hand it down to their heirs, will always want to buy originals if they can afford it.  If they cannot afford it, then a high-quality limited edition Giclée print is a good alternative. The availability of reproductions does not make the original less valuable, because there is still only one original.  All the Van Gogh prints we see in frame shops do not devalue the worth of his original paintings.

The limited edition Giclée prints on canvas are all hand signed and numbered on the back by the artist. Each size has an edition run of 250 and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The gallery wrapped version is ready to hang and has a 1½" deep edge.
